UPDATE: Unfortunately, the United States has decommissioned all domestic Loran stations and chains. It appears that the transmission of Russian and Canadian signals has also ceased. We do not know the status of Loran chains located elsewhere in the world.

Modern GPS Navigators have pushed older Loran units out of the spotlight. But that doesn't mean that a Loran can't still meet your needs, especially for VFR flight on a budget. Don't forget that the accuracy that Loran offers was considered a big step-up when it was first introduced. Loran offers point-to-point navigation independent of terrain or altitude.
The biggest reason to consider a Loran is the greatly reduced cost. These sophisticated navigators are now available for a fraction of their original prices. They offer complete databases and many of the features that GPS buyers have come to expect.
