Product Description

The Garmin GTR-225 is a reliable VHF COMM transceiver with a bright, sunlight-readable display and smart frequency management.  It works well as a primary or backup COMM radio.  The GTR-225 is a solid upgrade from older King radios like the KY-196 / KY-196A or KY-197 / KY-197A.  It adds modern convenience and reduces pilot workload.

The GTR-225 provides COMM operation with 760 channels at 25 kHz spacing and 10 watts of transmit power.  (This GTR-225 is not suitable for European use.  The GTR-225A or GTR-225B are needed for 8.33 kHz spacing.)

The high-contrast LCD screen automatically displays the tuned frequency's navaid or airport identifier from the internal database. This gives quick confirmation of the tuned station. Automatic brightness adjustment ensures clear readability in any lighting.

The GTR-225 uses a standard-sized 1.35 inch by 6.25 inch faceplate.  This matches the footprint of many legacy slim-line COMM Transceivers from King and Apollo (UPS AT / Garmin).  The GTR-225 is not a direct slide-in replacement for these COMM radios, but its standard compact size make it a practical upgrade in most instrument panels.  You will not need to juggle your other radios to replace a legacy COMM with the GTR-225.

The GTR-225 COMM Transceiver also features:

  • Database Tuning - When you enter an airport or facility identifier, the GTR-225 retrieves the appropriate frequency from its internal, updateable database. USB updates keep the database current without removing the unit.
  • Proximity Tuning - When connected with a compatible GPS (Garmin GNS and GTN series), the GTR-225 shows nearby station identifiers for the selected frequency.  It also allows searches for the nearest airport, ARTCC, FSS, or weather frequencies. This helps pilots stay ahead in changing conditions.
  • Usage Tuning - The GTR-225 automatically recalls the 20 most recently used frequencies for fast access.
  • 15 User-Defined Memory Slots - You may store and label frequencies by type such as Tower, Ground, or ATIS. This makes recall quick in familiar airspace.
  • Standby Monitoring - This allows you to monitor the standby frequency without missing transmissions on the active one.  Incoming transmissions on the active frequency override the standby monitor, so the active frequency always has your attention.
  • Push-Button Active/Standby Flip-Flop - One-touch flip-flop is quick and simple, and remote flip-flop capability adds more convenience.
  • Automatic Squelch - Automatic noise rejection keeps reception clear, and an override is available to receive weak signals.
  • Built-in 2-Place Intercom - A voice-activated Intercom works for pilot and copilot.  This may be all you need for simple panels or some missions.
  • One-Touch Emergency 121.50 - Press and hold the flip-flop or remote transfer button for 2 seconds to tune 121.50 MHz instantly.
  • Stuck Mic Protection - The GTR-225 returns to receive mode after 35 seconds of continuous transmit.  This prevents blocking the frequency.
  • Built-in Timers - Count-up and count-down timers are available.

The Garmin GTR-225 provides clear, dependable COMM operation, smart frequency lookup, and workload-reducing features in a compact, pilot-friendly package.  For aircraft owners upgrading from older COMM radios, it offers a clean path to improved reliability, easier frequency management, and less cockpit distraction.
