GPS systems have revolutionized avionics with their accuracy, databases, and computing power. When deciding on a GPS system, there are a few points to consider:
Compatibility - If you have an existing Loran or older GPS, there may be a more advanced model that is a slide-in replacement. (If you are replacing a Loran, you will obviously need to replace the Loran antenna with a top-mounted GPS antenna.)
Moving Map - We carry GPS systems both with and without a built-in Moving Map. However, most of our customers prefer the additional position information offed by a Moving Map.
IFR Capability - We carry GPS systems that are approved for VFR use, IFR en route use, and IFR en route and approach use. A VFR system may certainly be used when you are flying IFR, but it must be a secondary navigation system. Most IFR-capable GPS systems will require the installation of an external CDI / Indicator and an Annunciator Control Unit (ACU) for the installation to earn an IFR approval. Be sure to discuss this with us, as you may already own a compatible CDI / Indicator.
Unless indicated otherwise, all of our GPS systems include the matching GPS antenna.
