The Avidyne IFD-540 competes with the Garmin GTN-650, but offers many improvements. The IFD-540 is more than a GPS Navigator, it's really a Flight Management System (FMS).

The IFD-540 offers a high-resolution 5.7" touchscreen display, and is a slide-in replacement for the GNS-530. Avionics with this degree of capability are as much computer as radio, so the GNS-530 --> IFD-540 should not be considered a plug-and-play upgrade. (For example, the IFD-540 needs to be configured to match your installation.) The GNS-530 --> IFD-540 upgrade should be considered a "less effort" replacement, and a head start which simplifies the installation.

• FMS Preview and GeoFill: Easily create and edit your flight plan with FMS Preview. GeoFill takes advantage of your current location to predict your next entry, minimizing scrolling and enabling faster, more accurate data entry.

• Synthetic Vision: Experience a "VFR-Like" view of terrain, hazards, obstacles, and traffic with Synthetic Vision. This artificial visual representation boosts your situational awareness for a safer flying experience.  If you don't have Synthetic Vision in a "6-pack" glass retrofit, you can put this view in your radio stack.

• Integration with IFD 100 iPad App: Avidyne's IFD 100 iPad app turns your iPad into a remote control.  It gives you the option of an even-larger display at relatively little additional cost.  You may also mount your iPad in a more-ergonomic location.  The IFD 100 app allows easier flight plan creation and modification, and may mirror information from the IFD-540, including ADS-B In weather and traffic, for enhanced awareness.
